Role Deubt as Rusalka at San Francisco Opera

Rachel Willis-Sørensen brings her precise coloratura and strong presence when she returns to the San Francisco Opera to debut the title role in Dvorak’s opera Rusalka. Of particular anticipation will be the enchanting Willis-Sørensen’s plaintive, prayer-like and ephemeral Song to the Moon, as Rusalka declares herself smitten with a prince she sees at water’s edge. So smitten is Rusalka that she becomes human in pursuit of her infatuation.

Though somewhat obscure, Rusalka is certain to please since Dvorak was such a highly skilled orchestrator with superb emphasis on strings. His music carries a hint of folkloric melody, and plays well with this story from Slavic mythology, crafted by librettist Jaroslav Kvopil.

Ms. Willis-Sørensen is joined by tenor Brandon Jovanovich as the Prince, while Jamie Barton sings  Ježibaba. Eun Sun Kim makes his San Francisco Opera debut as conductor of this spirited piece. Performances run from June 16 through June 28.
