Elias at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia
Ms. Willis-Sørensen will be performing the German translation of Felix Mendelssohn’s Elias oratorio with the Orchestra and Choir of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia on January 29, 2021.
The performance will be conducted by the renowned conductor Antonio Pappano, and Ms. Willis-Sørensen will have the pleasure of performing alongside Benjamin Bernheim, Wiebke Lehmkuhl, and Christof Fischesser. The concert is included in the institution’s digital broadcast series and will not have a live audience in attendance, per Italy’s Covid-19 regulations.
The oratorio, not lacking in drama, depicts the life of the prophet Elias (Elijah) as told in the books of First and Second Kings of the Old Testament. The story includes a resurrection of a fallen youth, a vision of god, a fiery altar, and a flaming chariot. Following the premiere of the work in English in 1846, it was immediately claimed a triumphant success and was premiered in the German language in the city of Leipzig, a few months after Mendelssohn’s death.
The concert will be broadcast on Rai Cultura (TV), and on Rai Radio 3.
