Die Fledermaus at the Wiener Staatsoper

Rachel Willis-Sorensen

Rachel returns to the Wiener Staatsoper for the third time this season, following her successful performances as Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello and Marguerite in Gounod’s Faust; enthralling audiences once more as Rosalinde in Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus which opens on New Year’s Eve, in keeping with a long tradition at the Wiener Staatsoper which dates back to 1900. Rachel’s most recent performance in this role – opposite Jonas Kaufman at the Staatskapelle in Dresden in 2018 – was praised by Frischeohrenfürklassik for breaking down “the double-edged moral of the story beautifully… Her voice is clear and without the slightest fault throughout the night”. This time she is joined by her colleagues, Andreas Schager as Gabriel von Eisenstein, Wolfgang Bankl as Frank, Christina Bock as Prinz Orlofsky, Jörg Schneider as Alfred, Clemens Unterreiner as Dr. Falke and Vera-Lotte Boecker as Adele. Under the musical direction of Bertrand de Billy, Otto Schenk’s sentimental yet indulgent production gets beneath the social veneers of 19th-century bourgeois society to revel in its high-spirited and risqué underbelly.
