Whatever happens, if you win or not, it is worthwhile to put yourself out there in the competitions, to see what you can learn from the emotional situation that you are thrust into. I wouldn’t have been a successful professional if it weren’t for competitions, because it is the cheapest way to access lots of people in the business. If you pay your own money to fly to audition for one house, you invest a lot of money and time… and it can work out or not. There are so many theaters, you can’t do this for every single theater in the world...

Opera Charm

Rachel Willis-Sörensen gehört zu einer neuen Generation von Sängerinnen: selbstbewusst, offen, humorvoll und ohne Diven-Schnickschnack. Die Amerikanerin hat drei kleine Kinder, sie sieht (trotzdem!) immer aus wie aus dem Ei gepellt: mit tip-top Make-up und perfekter Haarfrisur, egal ob bei der Probe oder auf ihrem Instagram-Account. Im Netz veröffentlicht sie kleine, witzige Clips, in denen sie Opernheldinnen aus deren fiktivem Tagebuch erzählen lässt: als Elsa oder als Desdemona. Dass sie in keine Schublade passt, ist klar – auch nicht musikalisch! Auf BR-Klassik ist Rachel Willis-Sörensen zu Gast in "Meine Musik" und erzählt Sylvia Schreiber über Karriere, Kinder und das Leben mit Wagner UND Verdi.

Crescendo

Chef dirigent Alan Gilbert hat sich entschlossen, die Oper "Rusalka" mit dem NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester im Rahmen des Internationalen Musikfestes Hamburg, diesmal unter dem Motto "Natur" stehend, auf die Bühne der Elbphilharmonie zu bringen. Die besondere Musik Dvořáks, sein Talent für lyrische (Natur-)Stimmungen, lohnt die Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Werk in diesem Kontext. Mit großen Stimmen des Gesangs ist die Oper besetzt. In der Hauptrolle die amerikanische Sopranistin Rachel Willis-Sørensen. Sie hat soeben bei Sony Classical ihr Debütalbum herausgebracht. Unter dem Titel "Rachel" zeigt sie die ganze Bandbreite ihres Repertoires, von Mozart bis Verdi, von Dvořák bis Lehár.
